The first thing that you need to do is meet the minimum requirements. This will be determined by what type of license that you are looking for. You can work as an independent contractor if this is your goal, but it might take some time to build up a client base since most people who hire private investigators have high standards and want someone with experience. If these credentials don’t matter so much to them then they may choose another candidate over you because they think that their case would go smoother with someone else. Therefore, having these qualifications means less competition in finding clients
Typically, there are two types of licenses available for those who want to become private investigators: P licensed or PSI-licensed . The first one allows individuals to carry firearms while doing detective work which may include conducting surveillance, interviewing people and making arrests. The PSI-license is for those who want to conduct business in other states and it’s also the most common type of license.
In order to get a P licensed you must meet these requirements: be at least 21 years old, be a U.S citizen or have permanent residency, complete an approved training program with a firearms component, pass a criminal background check and have no felony convictions
In order to get the PSI-license you must meet these requirements: be at least 18 years old, complete an approved training program without a firearms component, pass a criminal back ground check and have no felony conviction.
Aside from having the right qualifications, private investigators should have good communication and observational skills as well as good judgment and decision making abilities. Since most people who hire private investigators want someone with these characteristics, it’s important to take the time to build them up in order for you to be successful at your job.
